Most women do not have too much difficulty applying their mascara. They often do it with a mechanical-like flick, in the morning, between two sips of coffee. Of course, making your mascara last a long time or applying false lashes is another story. Here are some tips and tricks to help you achieve perfect lashes at all times, whether you use mascara or false lashes.

1. Coat your lashes with liquid concealer before applying your mascara

One of Kim Kardashian’s (the eyelash queen) favourite tricks is to use a concealer as an eyelash primer. Kim says she uses a small brush to disperse the product through her lashes. She waits for it to dry, then applies her mascara.

2. Apply your false lashes on the underside of your upper lashes instead of on top to make them less visible.

Not only will it look more natural (the glue will show less), but you will also feel much more comfortable this way.

3. Overlay several lash strips for a glamorous look

RUBEN CHAMORRO

This is a classic trick that performers use to make their lashes and eyes pop. When a single strip of lashes is not showy enough, place another strip of straight false lashes on top to double the density. You’ll have a breathtaking look, guaranteed!

4. Fold your mascara brush to make it easier to maneuver

When you pull the brush out of the tube, gently bend the tip so that it is perpendicular to the handle. This new shape makes the brush easier to control. This way, you can reach areas that are harder to reach.

5. Wipe off excess mascara on a paper towel to avoid lumps

A new mascara tube can transfer a lot of extra products onto the brush during the first uses, which can create lumpy lashes. So, before applying your first coat, slide your brush over a paper towel or tissue to remove any excess mascara.

6. Apply a coat of waterproof mascara on your regular formula to make your mascara last longer

The waterproof formula is ideal for retaining mascara throughout the day. However, because it is so difficult to remove, try applying your normal mascara first and finish with a waterproof coat. This also makes your mascara easier to remove at the end of the day.

7. Hold the brush horizontally if you want thick lashes, or turn it vertically for a more natural finish

KATHRYN FRIEDMAN

The way you hold the brush when applying your mascara can make a huge difference. By holding the brush horizontally and moving it back and forth, you will obtain voluminous lashes. If you hold it vertically and pass it along the length of your lashes, you will have a more natural look.

8. Soak your mascara tube in a cup of hot water

KATHRYN FRIEDMAN

If you’ve almost finished your mascara tube and you haven’t had it for three months yet (you should always discard your mascara after three months to avoid an eye infection), place it in warm water so you can use your product until the very end and avoid lumps.

9. Hold a spoon under your eyes when applying your mascara

Place a spoon under your eye with the curved side out, then apply your mascara as you would normally do on your lower lashes. This way, the mascara will rest on the back of the spoon rather than on your skin. This tip also works when applying mascara to your upper lashes.

10. Make your mascara an eyeliner

Slide an eyeliner brush onto your mascara brush, then use your brush formula to draw a line on your upper (and lower, if desired) lash line.

11. Sprinkle translucent powder on your lashes between the first and second coat of mascara

The translucent powder adheres to your lashes between each coat of mascara, making them more voluminous.

12. Refresh a dry mascara

Your mascara is only good for three months. But if it gets a little lumpy before its expiration date, add a few drops of saline water to stretch it out.

13. Use a cotton swab to remove mascara blunders

KATHLEEN KAMPHAUSEN

If you accidentally touch your eyelid with mascara after applying your eyeshadow, wait for the makeup to dry, place the tip of a cotton swab on top and turn it until the smudge disappears. If you try to remove the mark while the mascara is still wet, you will make the problem worse.

14. Curl your lashes with the edge of a spoon

If you don’t have an eyelash curler at hand, use a metal spoon to curl your lashes instead. Place the edge over your upper lashes with the back of the spoon against your eyelid. Then, with your finger, lightly press the base of your lashes against the edge to imitate the clip of an eyelash curler. Finally, move the edge of the spoon along the lashes and keep pressing it to bend them completely.

15. Remove lumps with a clean toothbrush

Take a new clean toothbrush (a used toothbrush can cause irritation or infection) and pass it through the lashes from root to tip. The hairs will grab any excess mascara and leave you with lump-free lashes.
