From the pantry to the bathroom and even in your actual garden, there are products everywhere in your home and backyard that can be used to assist you in your effort to grow plants, flowers, fruits and vegetables. 1. Baking soda
To keep your flowers healthy and to keep insect far from your garden, baking soda is simply the perfect product to use. It acts as an organic pesticide and as compost as well as easily replacing the toxic products on the market.

2. Irish Spring soap
“Irish Spring” soap is perfect to ward off deer and rabbits from your garden. Cut the bars into pieces and place them in small bags that you tie tightly. Then, staple the bags on wooden pikes. After, plant the pikes in the ground, around your garden.
3. Baby powder
Baby powder is very practical when it comes time to eliminate different insects that destroy our garden every year. Whether it is to ward off ants, aphids, beetles and even small rodents, baby powder is the ideal product to use. All you need to do is sprinkle some around your garden and even on your plants.
4. White vinegar
Besides warding off rodents, cats and insects, vinegar is perfect to remove weeds and to keep cut flowers longer. Also, it is ideal to clean your gardening tools and your clay pots. One thing is certain, you should always have vinegar in your house whether it is to cook, to clean or for gardening.
Besides killing mushrooms that accumulate on the ground, cinnamon repels ants and makes your plants stronger without endangering the environment. This spice helps your sick plants to heal and helps the good plants to grow more quickly. It is a great spice to use in the kitchen or in the garden.
If you want to grow some tomatoes, here is a simple technique that will easily convince you. All you need to do is place some tomato slices on top of a pot of earth, to cover the slices with earth and to leave the pot in the sun for 1-2 weeks. Of course, you have to water it frequently. After a couple of days, you will have tomato plants that will start to grow. All you will need to do is transplant them in your garden.
7. Boiling water
You can use boiling water to make weeds disappear. Simply pour a large pot filled with boiling water on the weeds. But, be careful not to pour any of the boiling water on your plant because they can be affected negatively by the boiling water.
Hard alcohol and weeds aren’t a great combination:
- Mix 30 ml vodka with a few drops of liquid detergent and 2 cups water;
- Pour this mixture into a spray bottle and use it to tackle the weeds in your garden;
- The alcohol will dehydrate the plants and thus make them disappear.
9. Essential oils
Essential oils are also effective to use against weeds, especially clove, cinnamon and red thyme oils. Just drizzle the weeds with these essential oils.
If you have weeds growing in between the bricks of your terrace, salt can be quite practical in eliminating them. To benefit from this ingredient, all you need to do is sprinkle some between the bricks and make sure the salt goes into the soil by pressing it in with your hands so the weeds can’t grow. They should disappear quite rapidly.
Liquid dish detergent is also a great product to use to tackle weeds. Mix 5 tablespoons liquid detergent with 4 cups water then pour the mixture into a spray bottle. Gently shake it and spray the weeds.
As indicated above, you don’t need to buy expensive chemical products to eliminate weeds. You can get rid of them with natural and biodegradable products like vegetable oil to take full advantage of your garden!
Use the natural powder for more than cleaning your clothes. Be careful not to use it near flowers or vegetable as it will damage growth of those too.
13. Lemon Juice
You can douse weeds between concrete or bricks with lemon juice to kill unwanted weeds in just a day or two.
14. Rubbing alcohol
Fill a clean squirt bottle with 2 tablespoons alcohol and 1 quart water. Saturate the dandelions with the mixture, being certain to wet all the leaves. The rubbing alcohol will draw out moisture killing the plant. For best results, apply the mixture on a sunny day, avoiding grass and other plants.
