Hotel rooms and hotel bathrooms are particularly comfortable, elegant and luxurious. In addition, they are impeccably clean. But what is their secret? How do hotels keep their bathrooms so clean? Two experts, Jenny Botero, Executive Housekeeper at the Crystal Gateway Marriott in Arlington, Virginia, and Erika Jacso, Director of Style at the W New York Union Square in New York City, shared with us 10 simple steps to keep your bathroom sparkling clean. Feel free to test their cleaning tips now!
1. Get rid of hair and dust
On the rare occasions that the W Union Square hotel receives a complaint, “it usually has to do with hair or dust on the tiles or the floor in the bathroom,” explains Erika. Her team’s goal is to make sure that never happens. They work from top to bottom, dusting lights and shelves with microfibre cloths before vacuuming floors and cracks.
2. Use hot water
Heating tiles and the bathtub at only 10 degrees above normal air temperature “doubles the efficiency” of alkaline cleaners, says Jenny. Her staff fills the bottom of the tub with a few inches of “the hottest water they can get from the tap” and let it flow for a few minutes. Erika’s staff also throws hot water on the tiles, shower and bathtub to clean the bathroom.
3. Spray an antibacterial cleaner
Drain the tub, then spray an antibacterial cleaner on the walls, tub, countertops, sink, toilet and floor. Work from top to bottom, starting at the top of the shower walls and spraying your cleaner into the tub and toilet bowl.
4. Spread your cleaner evenly
Use and sponge or a cloth to spread the cleaner evenly on all the tile surfaces.
5. Relax and let your disinfectants do the job
Disinfectants need some time to work. For example, Erika’s team lets the product sink in for 5-7 minutes in the toilet bowl and on surfaces.
6. Scrub
Use a scrub brush or scrub pad to scrub every square inch of the tub and shower tiles. Both housekeeping experts love Mr. Clean Magic Eraser, especially when it comes to removing stubborn stains in the tub.
7. Rinse
This is the most important step, according to Jenny. Chemicals in cleaners are designed to attract dirt and particles to the floor,” she says. If you do not rinse after spraying your cleaner, dirt will stick to it, accumulate and “be even more annoying”.
8. Dry
Use clean, dry cotton rags or cloths to dry all surfaces thoroughly. Jenny recommends using coloured cloths for cleaning – blue for glass and reflective surfaces, yellow for the toilet and pink for bathtubs and sinks. This way, you never make the mistake of wiping the sink with a cloth that was used to dry the toilet.
9. Glass and mirrors
Spray the mirror and other glass surfaces with a glass cleaner and then wipe.
10. Wash your floors
When you are finished cleaning your bathroom, leave the bathroom by rinsing, wiping and drying the floor.
