Making your own household products is an economical, ecological and rather rewarding solution. Anyone can do it: there’s nothing complicated, but it feels good to have a choice. We are not obliged to buy all the industrial products that are imposed on us. Well, it’s the same for dishwashing detergent tablets. You can make them yourself, they are cheaper per kilo and you avoid hundreds of unnecessary and polluting packaging. And when you’re out of them, you don’t have to run to the grocery store or supermarket anymore. Here are the tips to make your own dishwashing detergent tablets.
1. How to make homemade dishwashing detergent tablets?
To make homemade tablets (or pods) for your dishwasher, that are effective and smell good, here is the recipe. Then use your dishwasher as usual.
2. Ingredients per 200 grams of pods
- 50 g of soda crystals
- 50 g baking soda
- 50 g citric acid
- 50 g coarse salt
- A few drops of lavender, mint or lemon essential oil
- Water
3. Where can you find the ingredients to make homemade dishwasher pods?
You can find soda crystals, bicarbonate and citric acid (which comes from lemon) in pharmacies, drugstores, organic shops or DIY stores. Citric acid sometimes also exists as a homemade descaler.
4. Preparation
Start by mixing all the ingredients together in a container, without the water. Make sure that the essential oil chosen has been properly incorporated. Then gradually add water (using a teaspoon or spray) until you get a snowy texture. Do not add too much water or your pods will have difficulty drying. Then simply place your mixture in one or more ice cube trays to shape your tablets and compress well. Do it immediately after finishing your mixture, if you let it dry first it will be difficult to cut. Leave the dishwasher pods to dry for half a day. After drying, turn your ice cube tray over: the dishwashing detergent tablets will easily come out!
5. Conservation
Store your homemade dishwashing detergent tablets in a pretty glass jar or container of your choice, away from moisture. Use them like your usual tablets.
